Latest Progress

90% of the engine tin has been degreased and sent off to East Coast Powdercoat for treatment. The engine block, cylinder heads, oil pump, crank and cam shafts are at Volks-Tech () in Burlington, NJ for machining. Turns out, one of the cylinder heads had three cracks, making it irreparable, but the Volks-Tech guys had a replacement handy. I supplied replacement parts from Gene Berg: valves, springs, guides, spring retainers & keepers.

The case required an align bore, as the crank bearing holes were out of round. I sprung for case savers for the engine studs - this is a highly recommended upgrade of early VW engine cases.

The oil pump backlash and gears (including the transmission fluid gears) were in good shape.

The crankshaft was in good shape and did not require a regrind, just polish the journals.

The camshaft was likewise in OK shape.

All things considered, not too painful.
